Broadlawns Medical Center
Broadlawns Medical Center, the county hospital for Polk County, includes an acute care hospital, emergency services, inpatient and outpatient services, lab and radiology services, mental health services, specialty clinics, dentistry, and a 24-hour crisis team. Residents in the Broadlawns-UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program will complete rotations in ambulatory medicine, ambulatory neurology, inpatient psychiatry, outpatient medicine, emergency medicine, outpatient neurology, forensic, geriatric. In their third year they will spend time doing collaborative and consultative psychiatry in ob/gyn, family medicine, and pediatrics at Broadlawns Medical Center.
Psychiatric services at Broadlawns include 44 inpatient psychiatric beds, a crisis center within the Emergency Department, a three bed crisis evaluation center and a psychiatric urgent care in addition to a large, full service outpatient behavioral health clinic.

Iowa Lutheran Hospital - UnityPoint Health-Des Moines
Iowa Lutheran Hospital is home to one of Iowa’s largest, private hospital-based mental health facilities.
Residents in the Broadlawns-UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program complete rotations on the adult inpatient Behavioral Health units as well as the child and adolescent behavioral health unit and the older adult geropsychiatry unit. Residents work on the medical units, including the Emergency Department, providing psychiatric consultation. Additionally, residents spend time at the Powell Chemical Dependency treatment program while completing their addiction rotation. In the third year of training, residents spend time working in the psychiatry outpatient Stabilization Clinic. There are also opportunities to spend elective time on the UnityPoint campus including the UnityPoint Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center.

VA Central Iowa Health Care System
The VA Central Iowa is a rigorous training site for psychiatric residents, with a busy inpatient service, consult liaison services, and a robust substance use disorder program. The VACIHCS outpatient services provide a significant number of evidence-based psychotherapies in addition to medication management, with strengths in the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Medication Assisted Therapies for substance use disorders.
Residents in the Broadlawns-UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program complete rotations in internal medicine (inpatient services) and inpatient psychiatric services at the VACIHCS, along with individual supervision available for some of the evidence-based psychotherapies. Additional rotations are being developed, including telepsychiatry, PTSD medication and psychotherapy, and substance use disorders (both psychotherapy individual/group treatment modalities and medication-assisted therapies), among others.
