Patient Condition Updates

Media representatives seeking information on a patient’s condition must provide the patient’s full name. Keep in mind that patients may choose to restrict the release of their information, including confirmation of their presence.

HIPAA Guidelines: We can only share one-word patient condition updates, as defined by the American Hospital Association:

  • Undetermined: Awaiting physician assessment.

  • Good: Vital signs stable, conscious, and comfortable.

  • Fair: Vital signs stable, conscious but may be uncomfortable.

  • Serious: Vital signs unstable, patient acutely ill.

  • Critical: Vital signs unstable, may be unconscious.

  • Treated and Released: Received treatment, not admitted.

  • Treated and Transferred: Received treatment and transferred to another facility.

  • Confirming Patient Death: We will confirm only after receiving signed consent from next of kin.

Patient Consent for Media Participation

Patients interviewed, videotaped, or photographed at Broadlawns must sign a Broadlawns Media Consent Form. Our media relations staff will coordinate consent and ensure the patient is medically capable of participating.

Media Escorts

To protect patient confidentiality, media must be escorted by Broadlawns Marketing staff while visiting any Broadlawns facility, including: 

  • Broadlawns Medical Center
  • Broadlawns Cityville Clinic
  • Broadlawns Community Clinic at Drake
  • Broadlawns East University Clinic
