A Message From the Program Director

Broadlawns Family Medicine Residency was established in 1971 as the first Family Medicine residency in Iowa and one of the first fully accredited family practice programs in the Midwest. As a community hospital in an urban center, our training is comprehensive, flexible, and longitudinal to prepare residents for any type of future practice.

Our experienced faculty oversee unopposed, first line training in the primary safety net hospital of Iowa’s largest city. Broadlawns Medical Center strives to build a healthy community in which there is accessible, cost-effective and high-quality patient care for all. We serve a diverse patient population in regards to race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

Our diverse patient population brings unique and rare medical conditions, which enhances overall training in “bread and butter” medical conditions. Residents therefore are trained to tackle medically and socially complex patients and utilize a team-based approach to care, with integrated case management, behavioral medicine, health coach and pharmacist available in both the clinic and hospital. Each year, residents and faculty also have the opportunity travel internationally to provide medical care abroad.

Our family medicine faculty mentor niche individual interests including sports medicine, women’s health, point of care ultrasound, dermatology procedures, and family medicine with surgical obstetrics. We encourage each resident to pursue their individual interests and support them with the training needed to excel in their desired practice.

Our residents and faculty are committed to provide a great learning environment together to support Broadlawns mission of teaching and caring for our community. Broadlawns Family Medicine Program has proudly graduated over 600 physicians, with over half currently practicing in the state of Iowa. Whether serving an urban clinic or practicing small town full scope family medicine, our graduates are ready to meet the challenge.
