Curriculum

Family Medicine Training

Family medicine inpatient service is run exclusively by our residents to provide continuity care for the Family Medicine Residency continuity patients. Rounds include a multidisciplinary team including a pharmacist, case manager, and Family Medicine faculty. Residents can add patients to their panel at any time and work to create a medical home for patients.  In the Family Health Center clinic, we provide refugee physicals, patient home visits, and virtual visits. The clinic has ample workspace for residents, OMM tables, procedure room, ultrasound, radiology within the building, and a large conference room for meetings. Residents spend a half day in the first year, 4 half days the second year, and 5 half days in clinic during third year.

Internal Medicine/ Critical Care

Internal Medicine/ICU care is provided by our residents in conjunction with an internal medicine or FM hospitalist. Teaching faculty and teams prioritize daily teaching rounds and lectures on the inpatient service (One or two residents are on a team with one faculty). Residents manage all code blues and inpatient emergencies while in-house. Mock codes, procedural training (central lines, I/O, POCUS) and critical care including airway management are an essential component of education.

OB and Women's Health Training

The newly renovated Birthing Center within Broadlawns provides ample opportunity to provide obstetrical care. Our facility delivers approximately 900 babies per year in our Level II Maternity Center. Deliveries are supervised by our FM faculty, FM/OB fellowship trained faculty, and our OB/Gyn specialists.

Procedural Training:

  •  Point of Care Ultrasound
  • IUD/implant contraception
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Vulvar biopsy
  •  Colposcopy
  • Surgical Obstetrics
  • Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) Certification

Pediatrics Training

Residents provide pediatric care in a variety of settings: newborn nursery, outpatient pediatrics clinic, and in the emergency department. Residents directly care for newborns with full-time Pediatric faculty and Family Medicine faculty with daily multidisciplinary rounds (SW and Nursing) to cover the Broadlawns Newborn Nursery.  Newborn and Pediatric mock codes are held regularly and training includes: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and umbilical vein catheter placement.

Residents have inpatient pediatric and pediatric emergency room rotations at Blank Children’s Hospital. On these rotations, residents work directly with Pediatric hospitalists and specialists. NICU, pediatric endocrinology, and pediatric orthopedics are several popular electives for residents.

Community Outreach

There are many local opportunities for residents to provide support to our community. From volunteering at free clinics, back to school physicals, sideline management at high school or university sporting events, medical support for running events, or refugee physicals, community outreach is an opportunity to engage our community. Broadlawns is an official partner with Drake Athletics, so there are ample opportunities to be involved with sports medicine.

International Opportunities

Several teaching faculty travel to Honduras annually to provide a medical care. Trips have included OB experience with deliveries, providing care in an area with little access to medicine, and volunteering in the community.

Affiliated Programs

The Residency Programs are affiliated with the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.  As a member of the Des Moines Area Medical Education Consortium, Broadlawns has affiliations with Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children's Hospital.
